Soup Diets and How they Work
The most popular is the cabbage soup diet but there are many different recipes which are mainly copy-cats of this diet. It is a fad and basically has you eating lots of cabbage soup. The idea is to have the person fill up on cabbage which is low in calories, water and other vegetables.
They claim you can kick-start your diet by losing 10 lbs in a week which is nearly impossible if it is to be all from fat. That means that most of it is water loss which doesn't do you any good whatsoever. You basically waste a week of your life eating something that you'll get sick of fast.
Most people I know who have tried it have said that it has no taste (even with the high salt content), not much protein (a low protein diet lowers your metabolism) and feel dizzy sometimes. Not good.
The diet is supposed to last 7 days so right there it automatically goes against the first tenet, doesn't taste good which goes against the second tenet, and isn't all that healthy which goes against the third tenet. It scores a big fat zero in my books.
Despite all the negatives it still remains popular. People are attracted to the idea of quick and easy fat loss and also the marketing around it has been creative. Usually it's centered around some ancient lore to create the image that it is special in some way.
But I do recommend homemade soups with lots of vegetables as side dishes to your main meal. They are good for you and will help make you feel full. Just watch the salt and make sure they are a 'side' dish and not your main source of calories or nutrition.
