The Set Point Theory of Weight Loss

A Little Twist Here

There is a theory that is seldom spoken about in the weight loss equation called the set point theory

Each of us has a different set point in our body just like we all have different heights, eye color etc...

Your set point, according to this theory, is a point where your body is comfortable keeping you at a certain weight. It is programmed so to speak, to keep you there and will resist many of your attempts to change your weight. Don't worry though, it can be changed.

The set point can't really be overpowered by some new diet fad or by severely reducing your calorie intake. Nobody knows for sure how to change it but the best theories out there say that consistent, regular exercise is one of the best ways and I would add that consistency in good eating is too.

What this means is that if you start to exercise and eat well (not diet) you are telling your body that it needs to change to adapt to the new lifestyle you have. One that is more active now and has better food. You are telling it to change by slimming down, toning up and being more fit so it can tolerate your new routine. The set point in your body will fight you and try to keep you where you are and you may not see weight loss for a period of time because of it. But, by persisting and being consistent with your exercise and eating, you are telling your body that your new routine will continue and that you are giving it (your body) no choice but to adapt. The set point will then start to align itself with what your body needs (a slimmer and more fit frame to be compatible with all the exercise and better food) and then be lowered and you will lose weight and stay at that new level for a time before it is lowered again by more of the same.

If you were to try starving yourself or eating too few calories the set point will rise because yourll go into survival mode and slow your metabolism down which is not what you want at all. You will then get frustrated and maybe binge and gain more and round and round you go.

So once again the answer is to find a way to make exercise and good eating a permanent and enjoyable part of your life which will be discussed soon.
