Why Does it Have to Be All or Nothing?
Every diet I have ever seen has a plan for you for every minute of your life, at least when it comes to your food and exercise regime. What I mean is, if you miss one exercise session or forget a meal or cheat during a meal or two then you are considered 'off the diet' and are no longer doing anything beneficial for your body. You messed up and ruined the whole thing and either have to start all over or quit or something nutty like that. Why?
I mean how in the world is anyone supposed to follow anything so strict? It's almost impossible and when you do deviate from the diet you feel bad about it or feel frustrated and don't really get anywhere. And that's the problem with following a strict plan. Your invested time and effort don't come back to you in any way and is therefore wasted.
If instead you decided to realize that we are human and that a big change in the way we do things can take some time and that you will start instead by creating habits and guidelines to live and eat by, then you'll see results. If you've read the previous chapters you'll recall I mentioned just trying one new thing/change at a time and make it permanent. Then do one more and one more and soon you will have built a good foundation of habits, recipes, routines and thought patterns that you now have for life. The transition is gradual so it is easier and you will be a changed person with regards to your eating and exercising.
Just make sure you are honestly enjoying your food and you will bring about change. If you slip up, fine. If you go on vacation for a week and gain 10 lbs then fine. When you come back you still have your new ways of doing things (eating, preparing, cooking) that are tasty and enjoyable and not something you have to stick to but something that is just what you normally do. That's progress and change and advancement and is much more powerful than some new gimmicky diet that will fade away when the next one comes along.
