The Hell with Calorie Counting !

HOME | CONTACT |

It's not that Important.

They say that for a woman to maintain her weight she needs to eat on average 2000 calories per day. Oh really? Ok then, let's say that she eats them ALL at breakfast and nothing else throughout the day. According to many weight loss gurus on TV, in magazines and on the radio she shouldn't gain anything because she isn't eating more than she burns.

But ... the fact is that she will gain weight because her body doesn't need THAT MUCH food at one time. It will take and process what it needs for the moment and store the rest as fat. Then because she's not eating throughout the day, her metabolism will slow somewhat and she'll gain even more.

Yeah I know that was an extreme example sooooo ... let's try another!

Suppose this same woman decides to eat 2000 calories per day and breaks it up into 3-5 meals like we all should. BUT, all of the 2000 calories come from eating chocolate fudge. Heck, let's say she only eats 1800 calories. That way it's even less that she needs so surely she can't gain weight and should lose weight right?

Wrong! She'll still gain weight even though she spaced out her meals and ate less than her daily max. Why? Because all the sugar in fudge will send her insulin levels flying which means that most of the calories will be stored as fat. But if she decided to eat those 1800 or 1900 or 1999 calories from lean chicken, rice and broccoli she would lose weight. Yep.

EAT 1800 CALORIES OF FUDGE AND YOU'LL GAIN WEIGHT. EAT 1900 CALORIES FROM GOOD FOODS AND YOU'LL LOSE WEIGHT

IT'S NOT THE AMOUNT OF CALORIES THAT COUNTS.

If losing weight was as simple as "Calories In - Calories Out" then we could all lose weight eating under 2000 calories per day (as a rough example) in sugary, chocolate fudge and all at breakfast.

What I'm basically trying to say is that calorie counting is not an exact science and that there are so many factors that can influence your metabolic needs including:

Genes - We all have a different metabolism level. If you need proof just look at the guy or girl you know who can eat anything they want and never gain weight.

Activity Level - If you exercise your metabolism will be much higher than your twin brother's who doesn't. Also how much time you spend moving around as opposed to sitting in a chair all day affects metabolism.

Medications - Some cause weight gain like SSRI's can.

And there are more but you get the picture. So the next time you hear a weight loss guru telling you to eat less calories than you burn every day they are basically saying, "don't overeat" which we all knew anyway.

The formula is basically to eat the right foods that are lower on the glycemic index, space out your meals, exercise, enjoy it all and stick to it. The next chapters will talk about how to do these things so that they work for you.
