How Does it Work?
Most of us have heard of this popular diet which is basically one where you keep your carbs very low and eat lots of protein and fat. The founder claimed that refined sugar made you fat and caused obesity (which I agree with) and so he decided that going to the opposite extreme - eating mainly high fat and high protein - was the answer.
Now if you've read the first chapters on this site you'll probably be thinking that it seems to make sense. If you stop eating sugar then you won't release insulin and if that happens then you won't store calories as fat. True enough.
But ...
There are a couple of problems and the main one is talked about in the first tenet. How long could anyone possibly keep this up? Imagine eating only veggies, meat, chicken, eggs, cheese and sausage for the rest of your life. No carbs. No pasta, rice, bread, toast, desserts, potatoes, milk, yogurt, ice cream, many fruits, cereals, muffins, pancakes and more. If you can't stay on the Atkins diet continually then you will gain all the lost weight back, all your effort and sacrifice is lost and you just wasted more of your time.
That diet also can cause health problems like cardiovascular disease (but the evidence goes both ways for now) and kidney stones. It has been known to also promote calcium loss.
So, if you feel that you will be blissfully happy on a diet like this for the rest of your life without cheating then I'd suggest you talk to your doctor and do some research first before doing so. For the other 99.99% of us who wouldn't fit into that category I'd say follow the advice (the chapters) listed on the home page of this site to formulate an enjoyable plan.
